Having gotten a makeover and lessons on how to attract guys and be popular, the Zetas throw a party, which is a huge success. Later, the Zetas are reviewing the girls who are hoping to pledge to Zeta. Lilly, a British Zeta sister with social anxiety, says their new popularity has made them conceited and forget the true value of sisterhood. When they realize what they have become, they blame Shelley—just as she returns from her unsuccessful date.
I really didn’t expect this movie to be very good, even with Adam Sandler producing this comedy. Anna Farris plays Shelley, an aging (27 years old) Playboy bunny who is living her dream as a resident of the Playboy mansion, hoping to be the November centerfold. On the morning following the enormous birthday bash that Hefner threw her, she receives a letter asking for her to move out of the mansion. Devastated, Shelley packs her belongings into her beat-up clunker of a station wagon and moves out into the real world… homeless, jobless and witless.
During her time with the Zetas, Shelley meets and becomes attracted to an intellectual, altruistic guy named Oliver, who works at a retirement home. She uses seductive tactics that work with other guys, but they fail because Oliver actually wants to get to know Shelley rather than just hook up with her. To impress Oliver on their second date, Shelley starts attending classes and reading books, and tones down her appearance. The second date is also a disaster because she wears glasses that are not meant for her, and brings along notecards to help her sound smart.
Danny’s Farm at Cal Poly Pomona is geared for children and adults with autism. The bunnies can be found on site but also travel as part of a mobile petting zoo. Their schedule is changeable, so call to be sure they are there; or maybe if there is an occasion that merits it, bring the bunnies to you. While this works much of the time, it occasionally falls flat when the sorority sisters begin to come out of their shell and, as well, in trying to sell a potential love story between Hanks and Faris that never quite feels believable. The joy of "The House Bunny" is that while Shelley is certainly a funny character, Faris never allows her to be someone we laugh at.
I dare say that "The House Bunny" reaches much more of its comic potential before the Zeta's discover make-up, boys and snootiness thanks to Shelley's Playboy-laced advice on how to become more popular. Faris' commanding comedic performance is extra impressive considering the Zeta house is filled with Emma Stone, Kat Dennings, Rumer Willis, Katharine McPhee, and Dana Min Goodman, the latter being one of the first to come forward about Louis C.K.'s history of abuse. Goodman's career was unfortunately impacted by her bravery, which is all the more reason to rewatch "The House Bunny" and marvel at her hilarious delivery of asking where the bathroom is so she can "drop off some lumber" as a pick-up line. An ex-Playboy bunny tries to turn some wallflowers into the hottest girls on a university campus. Although Shelley had just been invited back to the Playboy Mansion after Hefner had learned of the forged dismissal and decided to stay with the Zetas, the unexpected attack from them makes her reconsider and she calls back to accept the invitation.
Faris is known for her leading role in the "Scary Movie" franchise and for her eight seasons on "Mom," but in the grand scheme of things, Hollywood hasn't appreciated her comedic talents the way they have other actors. The fact that Anna Faris isn't the go-to comedic actress of a generation is a crime against humanity, because there's no one quite like her. She's just as hilarious as she is sexy, and has managed to work both angles in an industry where actresses are typically forced to choose one or the other.
